Bringing inclusive play to Glasgow — and beyond

Hello, I’m Callum Monaghan, and together with my dad Terence Monaghan, I’m proud to run Saltire Play — a family business with a big mission: to make play more inclusive, more imaginative, and more meaningful for communities across Scotland.

Our latest project: St Columba’s Primary
We’ve just finished installing colourful playground markings at St Columba’s Primary. What might seem like simple painted shapes are actually tools for learning, movement, and connection. From number grids and alphabet trails to interactive games, these markings transform a plain yard into a space where children can learn through play and share experiences side by side. The feedback from St Columba’s has been fantastic, with pupils already enjoying a brighter, more engaging playground.

It’s not just markings — it’s Play equipment too
Of course, our work doesn’t stop at paint. We design and install full play equipment — inclusive swings, sensory play panels, roundabouts with wheelchair access, and surfacing that allows every child to move safely.

Too many playgrounds still unintentionally exclude children with mobility or sensory needs. At Saltire, we’re changing that by making sure no child is left on the sidelines.

Why inclusive play matters
Play is more than fun — it’s how children learn, grow, and connect. Yet research shows that many Scottish play areas still lack proper accessibility, leaving families frustrated and children excluded.

We believe every child deserves to feel they belong in their local park or schoolyard, which is why we focus on inclusivity in every design. When equipment and markings are accessible to all, brothers, sisters, and friends can play together without barriers.

Our mission for Glasgow and beyond

We’re committed to bringing inclusive play not only to Glasgow, but to communities across Scotland and the wider UK.

From school playgrounds to local parks, our goal is to create safe, fun, and welcoming spaces that reflect the needs of every child.

Giving back to veterans

We believe in building stronger communities is about more than play, we also reinvest part of our profits into supporting veterans in crisis. Scotland’s veterans face real challenges — from homelessness to mental health struggles — and we want Saltire Play to play its part in offering practical support. For us, it’s simple: by helping children thrive in inclusive spaces today, and helping veterans rebuild tomorrow, we can make a lasting difference.

Looking forward
Our journey is just getting started. Whether it’s bold playground markings, innovative inclusive equipment, or full park refurbishments, Saltire Play is here to bring joy, connection, and fairness to Scotland’s play spaces.

Together, we’re building more than playgrounds — we’re building communities.

Yours in play,
Callum Monaghan
