Public Diners: Learning from Poland’s bary mleczne (milk bars)

20 July @ 12:30 pm - 3:30 pm

Free

We have public hospitals, public libraries, even public WiFi. Why not public diners?

What are public diners?

Public diners are state supported, affordable restaurants serving good meals to the general public. They used to operate in the UK under the banner of British/Civic Restaurants and they operate in numerous countries across the world today.

Public diners is a current policy proposal that will help deliver what the private food environment is struggling to: healthy, sustainable meals in a convenient way and at an affordable price. They will sit alongside our public libraries, public hospitals, public parks and protect our right to food as well help deliver big public health and climate improvements. Read more about public diners here.

Lunch + Learning event:

Over the past couple of months a group of local ‘citizen social scientists’ trained by the Citizen Science Academy at University College London have been carrying out some research about the history, purpose, and culture of public diners, focusing on the Polish Milk Bar (bar mleczny) by engaging with the Polish community in and around Glasgow. They were interested in learning what works about public diners in other cultures, and how they might be adapted here. We will then have time for you to give your input and ideas on the future of public diners locally.

1:00-2:00 – Community Lunch (complimentary)
