Winter Warmer at the ARC

9th December 2023 @ 11:00 am - 3:00 pm


Join us on Saturday 9 December for a free, family-friendly Winter Warmer!

Drop-in any time between 12:00 and 15:00 to enjoy a whole host of festive activities, with a special smattering of events focussing on the theme of light.

All activities are FREE and most are drop-in. You’ll find extra booking links below for sessions that need to be reserved in advance.

Our wonderful café, The Western, will be open during the event for soup and sandwiches, coffee and cakes!

What’s On?


DNA Decorations
Workshop 1: 12:15 – 12:45; Workshop 2: 13:15 – 13:45; Workshop 3: 14:15 – 14:45

Make your very own origami DNA decorations! Starting with just a piece of paper and some clever folding, you’ll leave with your very own colourful DNA helix to hang wherever you choose!

Glass Mosaic Winter Workshop
12:30 – 14:30
Ages 8+ (all children must be accompained by an adult)

Join glass artist Sinhacandra for a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn how to make a beautiful glass mosaic decoration for the festive season, perfect for catching winter light. No experience required, and you’ll get to take your crafty creation home with you!

Stories and Songs to Light up the Dark
14:15 – 15:00
Ages 3 – 10 (children must be accompanied by an adult)

Join our wonderful storyteller Anna Lehr for some festive tales and songs! Expect stories that bring light into the dark of winter, songs to sing along to, and lots of interactive seasonal fun.


Activities are suitable for all ages unless otherwise specified.

Virtual Winter Worlds
Ages 8+ | Sign-up on the day

Step into some wintery worlds with our VR demos! Our XR Lab Manager, Imants Latkovskis, will get you all set up for exploring some virtual winter wonderlands, each with a unique take on the theme of ‘light’.

The Genetics Grotto
Festive Forensics
Calling all detectives! Santa’s seasonal sack has been stolen! Help us solve this magical mystery by using some of the latest forensic science to uncover the identity of the thief.
Jingle Bell Genetics
With the help of a few yummy treats and some of your favourite festive characters, step into the Genetics Grotto to learn, hands-on, how our DNA is inherited, and characteristics are passed on within families.

Crafting with Colour
Join the wonderful illustrator Emma Melchor, who’ll help you play with both colour and light to form some fantastic crafty creations!

DIY Virus Snowflakes
Make your own paper virus snowflakes and, through their beautiful symmetry, learn about a range of viruses. You can also try out the virus-viewing VR library experience…

Light Up (your) Life

Join researchers from the ARC to discover how we can view cells using fluorescent light and a microscope. Learn about techniques we use in the lab, and investigate some cells for yourself to find hidden structures. Decorate cells and see them light up under our fluorescent microscope – before taking them home to hang on your tree!

Plus music from the Byers Road Big Band at 12noon and 1 o’clock!
