SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Grant McPhee - Scene Within A Scene with Aidan Moffat
DESCRIPTION:The Long Play Sessions: Grant McPhee – Scene Within A Scene\n\nSpecial guest on the evening will be Aidan Moffat from Arab Strap.\n\n\n\nIn the follow-up to Postcards From Scotland\, Grant McPhee tells the story of how Scotland reinvented its musical identity during the 1990s. As the celebrated indie boom of the 1980s faded\, record labels collapsed\, rave culture dominated\, and guitar music faced an uncertain future.\n\n\n\nOut of this period of upheaval emerged a bold new wave of artists. Rejecting the familiar jangle-pop sound\, these bands drew inspiration from anarcho-punk\, hardcore\, no-wave and post-punk pioneers\, forging a more adventurous and uncompromising musical landscape. Influenced by bands such as Big Flame\, A Witness\, The Mackenzies\, Josef K and Fire Engines\, they helped redefine what Scottish independent music could be.

SUMMARY:Working to Breaking Point: Una Marson’s Broadcasting Career at the BBC
DESCRIPTION:Una Marson\, the first Black woman who was a full-time producer at the BBC registered significant broadcasting accomplishments despite enduring unique challenges. She was a colonial subject and Pan-Africanist who pushed against entrenched cultural prejudices to develop a legendary broadcasting presence. Despite her remarkable accomplishments\, her dismissal by the BBC left her sidelined and forgotten. This talk will use textual analysis with grounded theory to examine data that traced Marson’s professional experiences. Articles\, books\, audiovisual materials\, and internal BBC memos are reviewed to establish a contextual narrative of Marson’s tenure at the BBC. The analysis suggests scholars pursuing a comprehensive understanding of the contributions of Black pioneers should interrogate the nuances of their private struggles and the implications of their personal losses. This approach is important because narratives of Black exceptionalism rooted in values that embrace colonialism\, racism and imperialism have typically ignored or undervalued Black lives\, and have missed critical insights. \nThis talk is based on the Identities article\, ‘Working to breaking point: Una Marson’s pioneering broadcasting career at the B.B.C.‘

SUMMARY:Book Launch Come What May\, We’re Here to Stay The Story of South Asian Resistance in Britain.
DESCRIPTION:BOOK LAUNCH: Come What May We’re Here to Stay w/ Author Taj Ali \nJoin Glasgow Trades Council for the launch of Taj Ali’s new book ‘Come What May\, We’re Here to Stay’: The story of South Asian resistance in Britain. Author Taj Ali will be in conversation with Laura Webster\, Editor of The National. Their conversation will be followed by an audience Q&A and book signing. \nThursday 24th September \n18:30| Adelaide Place Baptist Church\, 209 Bath Street\, Glasgow \nTickets– https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/book-launch-come-what-may-were-here-to-stay-w-author-taj-ali-tickets-1998134244313?aff=oddtdtcreator \n* Funds raised from ticket sales will go towards the anti-racist campaigning work of Glasgow Trades Council. \nAs British South Asians reel from the riots of summer 2024\, this book tells the inspirational story of how the community organised against racism in the past and how it continues to fight in the present. \nBritish South Asians have a long tradition of radical political activism. The 1970s and 1980s saw the community grappling with prejudice in the workplace and violence in the streets. But this history is deeper than you might think\, from students agitating for independence at the heart of the British Empire to seafarers organising global strikes on the eve of the Second World War. \nTaj Ali reveals how successive generations fought for rights\, dignity and a sense of belonging while actively shaping the country they now call home. He shows that British South Asian political life has often been defined less by religious difference than by shared commitments to anti-imperialism and anti-racism. In pursuit of these goals\, alliances have been forged with other movements\, from Irish republicanism to Black Power. \nAs racism rears its ugly head again\, ‘Come What May\, We’re Here to Stay’ asks are we are doomed to repeat the past or will we learn from our mistakes and build a better world together? \nTaj Ali is a journalist and historian. He is the former editor of Tribune and regularly appears as a commentator on the BBC\, as well as contributing to the Guardian\, Al Jazeera English and others. For his work on hate crime and Islamophobia he was chosen as a finalist for the 2026 Orwell Prize.

SUMMARY:Off The High Street: Art Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition is free for everyone!\nGlasgow’s food landscape is often read through its high streets: the chains\, the shopfronts everyone passes but rarely notices. ‘Off the High Street’  looks past this surface to the food geography that sits just beyond it. This exhibition brings together two Thai\, foodie artists\, Chanicha ‘Millie’ Srithamma and Wattana Songpetchmongkol\, exploring Glasgow through illustration. Both come from architectural backgrounds\, and that training shapes how they look at the city: where a shop sits\, why it survives off the main routes\, and what that tells us about who the city is built to serve. Food becomes a way of reading the city’s hidden cultural landscape\, not just its flavors. \nEach piece documents a real place found through walking the city rather than searching for it. With each restaurant visited\, each dish served\, each story told\, the illustration yields not merely the taste of Glaswegian culinary scene; rather\, it paints the ‘wee’ memory worth sharing. \nThe exhibition invites viewers to reconsider their own city: what they walk past daily\, and what they might find if they stepped just one street over.

SUMMARY:The Glasgow Industry Cup - Padel 2026 Edition
DESCRIPTION:Glasgow’s workplace culture is about to get a lot more active. On Saturday 5th September 2026\, the Glasgow Industry Cup® brings together employees and local businesses from across the city for a first-of-its-kind inter-industry padel competition. \nHeld at Racket Barn in Govan\, the Glasgow Industry Cup® sees teams representing their industry go head-to-head across a World Cup-style format — group stages followed by a knockout bracket\, played across three courts throughout the day. So far\, five industries have confirmed their place in the competition: Law\, Finance\, Emergency Services\, Professional Learning & Development\, and Marketing & Sales\, with individuals and pairs from different companies signing up to represent their sector. \nThe idea behind the event is simple but powerful: work culture needs more genuine connection\, and play is one of the fastest ways to build it. Rather than networking over another coffee meeting or conference panel\, participants meet on the padel court — competing\, laughing\, and connecting with people from completely different industries and companies across Glasgow. \nPadel is one of the fastest-growing sports in the UK\, known for being easy to pick up regardless of experience level\, sociable by nature (played in pairs)\, and genuinely fun for complete beginners and seasoned players alike. No prior experience is needed to take part — rackets and balls are included as part of your ticket. \nWhether you’re taking part to represent your company\, meet new people in Glasgow’s business community\, or simply try something new with colleagues\, the Glasgow Industry Cup® offers a fresh\, energetic alternative to the usual work social. \nThe Glasgow Industry Cup® is organised by Corpwellnessplay\, a Glasgow-based company focused on bringing workplace wellness to life through play and sport.

SUMMARY:Hudson and Hudson Married at First Sleight
DESCRIPTION:The couple that tricks together\, sticks together! Husband-and-wife magicians Alan and Kat Hudson are bringing their hilarious comedy magic show\, Married at First Sleight\, to Eastwood Park Theatre in Giffnock.\n\nAlan and Kat both appeared separately on Britain’s Got Talent before joining forces as Hudson and Hudson. Alan went on to fool legendary Las Vegas magicians Penn and Teller on their television show Fool Us and appeared on ITV’s The Next Great Magician. Kat has also appeared on Fool Us and performed in the West End magic production Wonderville.\n\nWhen Alan and Kat first appeared on Britain’s Got Talent\, they had no intention of becoming a double act. Ant and Dec asked whether they might perform together\, but they both said no. Dec suggested that was probably sensible\, warning them that in a double act\, “one of you always ends up doing a lot of the heavy lifting”.\n\nAlan later decided that combining their talents could help them create something audiences hadn’t seen before and make their magic even more amazing. Kat remembers the conversation differently: according to her\, Alan said they could charge more if she joined the act.\n\nThat difference of opinion gives audiences a taste of Married at First Sleight. The show mixes jaw-dropping magic\, mind-reading and audience participation with stand-up\, sketches and the couple’s contrasting accounts of married life.\n\nSome of their onstage banter is written\, but they frequently go off script. Alan says Kat can’t resist introducing details from their personal lives because she knows she’ll have his full attention if she mentions them in front of an audience.\n\nThe show features their most ambitious and entertaining material\, including a spectacular version of the famous bullet catch\, a mind-reading experiment involving a dictionary and a finale designed to take the audience completely by surprise. Audience members may be invited to take part\, but Kat promises that anyone chosen will have a wonderful time.\n\nThe couple have performed around the world and previously appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe. Both have particularly happy memories of performing in Scotland.\n\nAlan says he loves the honesty of Scottish audiences: “When Scottish audiences laugh and applaud\, you know it’s 100% genuine.”\n\nKat added: “Scottish audiences are the best we’ve ever performed for. The warmth you instantly feel when you get onstage is something you never forget. We can’t wait to come to Glasgow!”\n\nMarried at First Sleight is a feel-good night of marriage\, magic and mind-reading for date nights\, mate nights and anyone who has ever argued over the remote. Even people who don’t normally choose magic shows can expect an evening filled with comedy\, surprises and impossible moments.\n\nThe performance takes place at Eastwood Park Theatre\, Rouken Glen Road\, Giffnock\, on Friday 4 September at 7.30pm. It runs for approximately one hour and 15 minutes and is suitable for ages 12 and over.\n\nTickets cost £20\, with no booking or transaction fee. The theatre has free parking\, a café and bar.
