SUMMARY:Film & Media Lab: From Ideas to the Big Screen (and Beyond!)
DESCRIPTION:Over 10 weeks\, we’ll come together as a creative team to imagine\, write\, build and produce our own original show. This is a hands-on filmmaking and theatre project where anything can happen. We’ll explore storytelling through casting\, character development\, scriptwriting\, improvisation\, music\, voiceovers\, filming\, editing\, green screen\, special effects and lots of creative experimentation. We’ll watch and recreate scenes from films we love\, share ideas\, jam together\, try things out and follow the creative process wherever it takes us. Everyone will have the chance to contribute — whether that’s performing\, writing\, directing\, creating sound and music\, designing visuals\, working behind the camera or bringing ideas to life. The project will be collaborative\, playful and full of surprises — Culminating in our very own production (in the form of a short film\, and/or a live performance) to share with an audience at House of Toad at the end of the programme. Places are offered on a pay-what-you-can basis\, with the project supported through House of Toad membership fees\, volunteers and our commitment to making creative opportunities accessible. \nWho is this for?\nHouse of Toad’s Film & Media Lab is for adults aged 18+ who are passionate about creativity\, film\, theatre and storytelling\, who may benefit from extra encouragement\, confidence-building and a supportive creative environment. The group is particularly suited to people with learning difficulties\, neurodivergence\, autism\, additional support needs\, or anyone who has found traditional education\, college\, employment or mainstream creative spaces difficult to access. We’re looking for people who are excited to collaborate\, share ideas and become part of a creative team — people who may just need the right environment\, encouragement and community to help their creativity flourish. \nParticipants should be able to take part independently within a group setting. We do not provide dedicated support workers or one-to-one care\, but all facilitators hold PVG certificates and are committed to creating a safe\, welcoming and supportive space. Over the course of the programme\, participants will explore the whole creative production process — from developing ideas and writing scripts\, to casting\, rehearsing\, creating characters\, filming\, sound\, music\, editing and experimenting with special effects. Together\, the group will work towards creating an original production to share in a final showcase. This is an opportunity to become part of a creative community\, develop skills\, make friends and create something amazing together. \n \nParticipants should be able to take part independently within a group setting. SUMMARY:Working to Breaking Point: Una Marson’s Broadcasting Career at the BBC
DESCRIPTION:Una Marson\, the first Black woman who was a full-time producer at the BBC registered significant broadcasting accomplishments despite enduring unique challenges. She was a colonial subject and Pan-Africanist who pushed against entrenched cultural prejudices to develop a legendary broadcasting presence. Despite her remarkable accomplishments\, her dismissal by the BBC left her sidelined and forgotten. This talk will use textual analysis with grounded theory to examine data that traced Marson’s professional experiences. Articles\, books\, audiovisual materials\, and internal BBC memos are reviewed to establish a contextual narrative of Marson’s tenure at the BBC. The analysis suggests scholars pursuing a comprehensive understanding of the contributions of Black pioneers should interrogate the nuances of their private struggles and the implications of their personal losses. This approach is important because narratives of Black exceptionalism rooted in values that embrace colonialism\, racism and imperialism have typically ignored or undervalued Black lives\, and have missed critical insights. \nThis talk is based on the Identities article\, ‘Working to breaking point: Una Marson’s pioneering broadcasting career at the B.B.C.‘

SUMMARY:The Long Play Sessions: Grant McPhee - Scene Within A Scene with Aidan Moffat
DESCRIPTION:The Long Play Sessions: Grant McPhee – Scene Within A Scene\n\nSpecial guest on the evening will be Aidan Moffat from Arab Strap.\n\n\n\nIn the follow-up to Postcards From Scotland\, Grant McPhee tells the story of how Scotland reinvented its musical identity during the 1990s. As the celebrated indie boom of the 1980s faded\, record labels collapsed\, rave culture dominated\, and guitar music faced an uncertain future.\n\n\n\nOut of this period of upheaval emerged a bold new wave of artists. Rejecting the familiar jangle-pop sound\, these bands drew inspiration from anarcho-punk\, hardcore\, no-wave and post-punk pioneers\, forging a more adventurous and uncompromising musical landscape. Influenced by bands such as Big Flame\, A Witness\, The Mackenzies\, Josef K and Fire Engines\, they helped redefine what Scottish independent music could be.

SUMMARY:Peter Cat with Marceline and Before Stories
DESCRIPTION:Indie rock band Peter Cat kick off their UK tour with a headline show at Nice N Sleazy. Support from Marceline & Before Stories. \nPeter Cat are a cinematic rock band from Glasgow\, whose music crackles with a dark and fierce intent. Combining art rock arrangements\, surreal lyricism\, and an arch vocal delivery\, their signature sound is at turns both playful and apocalyptic (sometimes both at once). It’s as if Pulp and King Crimson got involved in a mild fender-bender on the M1 – and neither had insurance.\nThe band signed with “East Anglia’s premier record label”\, Trapped Animal\, in late 2025 to release their sophomore LP\, Starchamber – an ambitious epic combining prog\, art punk and lo-fi electronica that earned them praise from MOJO\, Record Collector\, and the Bandcamp global homepage.\nNot an act to rest on their laurels (or anyone else’s)\, Peter Cat are back a mere 7 months later with ‘Innocent Driver’\, a razor-sharp track that’s already received support from BBC 6 Music and BBC Introducing in Scotland. Peter Cat are looking forward to a 12-date UK tour in late 2026 – their biggest yet. \nSupport comes from local art rock act Marceline\, new to the Glasgow scene and fresh off their debut EP In Spite of Time\, which The Progressive Subway described as the sound of a band “on the road to bigger and better things”.\nFurther support courtesy of Aberdeen’s Before Stories\, who have been delivering lowkey miserabilist minimalist bangers since 2015. Self-described as “one man in a suit shouting about things we don’t like\, while another man with nice trainers does the bare minimum of music we can get away with…and still call it a song.” \nDoors 7.30pm\n18+ \n£10 adv + bf

SUMMARY:Superposition
DESCRIPTION:Marking the centenary of the Schrödinger equation; a world-first art show exploring the ideas behind quantum physics. \nSixteen artworks spin at 400 revolutions per minute. Thousands of holes cut through sheets of aluminium appear to tunnel through space\, transforming flat surfaces into shifting\, three-dimensional forms.\nFor a moment\, the artworks seem to become something that shouldn’t exist. Then they stop spinning and the 3D forms collapse back into 2D patterns and the illusion disappears. \nOne mystery remains. Each artwork has an identical twin. When they stop spinning\, most of the twins behave exactly as chance would predict: they show the same sides half the time and opposite sides half the time. But one pair doesn’t. They show the same sides three quarters of the time. How does this pair know what their twin is doing? \nCreated by artist Gregor Harvie in collaboration with physicist Neel Mackinnon and the Quantum Theory Group at the University of Glasgow\, Superposition is funded by the Quantum Technologies Alliance for Research Challenges (Quantum ARC) supported by the Scottish Funding Council\, with additional funding from the Institute of Physics and the EPSRC Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT) in Applied Quantum Technologies at the University of Strathclyde. \nSuperposition will be presented in the entrance foyer of the Technology and Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow on weekdays from 20 to 29 October\, 9am to 4pm.

SUMMARY:AI Glasgow Filmstock Free AI Short Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:AI Glasgow Filmstock returns on Friday 23 October with a free afternoon of short films made fully or partly with artificial intelligence. Around 10 shorts from filmmakers around the world will be shown on a big screen in the Lower Hall at The Pyramid at Anderston\, 759 Argyle Street\, from 1pm to 5pm. \n  \nThe festival ran in 2025 as Glasgow Filmstock. This year is its first AI edition. The selection includes narrative\, documentary\, animated and experimental shorts\, and every filmmaker who entered had to describe how they used AI in their work. \n  \n“Our motto is vision over technology\,” says David\, Festival Manager of AI Glasgow Filmstock. “We wanted films with a clear idea and a person behind it. Some are bold\, some are strange\, and all of them were made to be seen on a big screen. If you have a friend who thinks AI can’t make cinema\, bring them along.” \n  \nA festival jury will choose the winners. Results will be announced on the festival website and Instagram after the event. \n  \nEntry is free\, but places are limited. SUMMARY:Reclaiming nature: We Are Nature Screening + discussion panel
DESCRIPTION:As part of Black History Month 2026\, CRER presents a screening of ‘We Are Nature’ directed by Amanda Daud + an expert panel discussion. \n\n\n\n\nAs part of Black History Month 2026\, the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER) presents a screening of ‘We Are Nature’ directed by Amanda Daud. \nConnor and Anesu immerse themselves in Scotland’s landscapes in this portrait of belonging and resilience. Through personal stories and childhood memories\, they explore the intersections of space\, power\, race\, and the outdoors. ‘We Are Nature’ captures the spirit of those who\, despite injustice\, reclaim their connection with nature. It’s an invitation to witness resilience and community strength\, and to imagine a more equitable relationship between humans and the environment. \nThis event will feature poetry from Phoenix Archer\, followed by a discussion with Amanda Daud\, Tariqua Telahun Gorrissen from Tariqua Rooted\, and Lucien Staddon Foster from CRER\, exploring the intersections of environmental justice and racial equality\, asking audiences what practical actions can we take to ensure we are addressing these issues in fair and sustainable ways? \nAmanda Daud is a documentary filmmaker\, visual anthropologist and outdoor enthusiast! Her first film\, ‘Sonder’\, was made during her time at the University of Cambridge cataloguing the student experience of the COVID-19 pandemic. Most recently\, she completed a MA in Visual Anthropology with a distinction from The University of Manchester. Throughout Amanda’s films\, there are consistent themes of social justice\, ecological activism\, and collective action. These interests led her to make her first commissioned film\, We Are Nature\, with the support of GMAC Film and Screen Scotland. Within her work\, her passion lies in telling stories that relate to postcolonial resistance and resilience. As such\, she is most interested in themes related to racism\, feminism\, environmental justice\, and mental health\, and loves to keep joy at the forefront of everything she does! \nLucien Staddon Foster is a researcher and anti-racism campaigner for the Coalition for Racial Equality and Rights (CRER). With a research background in geography\, exposing systemic racism through data\, and understanding how the legacies of slavery and empire have shaped Scottish landscapes\, he has played an important role in the national conversation on racial inequality\, colonial legacy and how Scotland’s institutions can better challenge systems of exclusion\, discrimination and oppression. Lucien sits on multiple advisory boards across government\, academia and the third sector\, he has authored a wide range of reports\, blogs and educational resources on racism in Scotland\, and since 2024\, he has been supporting the production of We Are Nature as a voluntary researcher. \nTariqua Telahun Gorrissen is the founder of Tariqua Rooted\, a grassroots practice grounded in healing\, reproductive wisdom\, creativity\, collective wellbeing and relationship with the living Earth. For more than thirty years\, her path of service has brought together the wisdom of her Ethiopian and African ancestry\, lived and embodied knowledge\, and academic learning in social work\, pedagogy and holistic health. As a healer\, teacher\, traditional midwife\, full-spectrum doula and creative practitioner\, she works with the many thresholds of life guided by nature\, plants\, seasons and cycles\, and by what our bodies\, ancestors and communities remember. Through teaching\, mentorship\, creative and collective practice\, Tariqua creates spaces for remembrance\, belonging and more reciprocal ways of living rooted in relationship\, responsibility\, reciprocity and care. \nPhoenix Archer is a cultural heritage professional and multidisciplinary artist. She has a history of engaging in the culture and heritage sectors to promote healthy representation. Phoenix likes to research diverse ways to increase respectful relationships with all kinds of people and create a more harmonious relationship between humans and the environment. \nPart of Black History Month Scotland 2026.

SUMMARY:Pillow Talks: Sextortion\, disability and navigating online relationships
DESCRIPTION:When online interactions are often used to threaten or exploit someone\, are disabled people being included in online safety conversations? \n\n\n\nFor this edition of Pillow Talks\, we’re bringing together perspectives (both in person and online) from disability\, cyber safety\, sex and relationships education and gender-based violence to explore sextortion\, online relationships and the support available when things go wrong. \nSextortion is a form of blackmail or coercion involving sexual or intimate material. Someone may threaten to share images\, videos or information unless the person gives them money\, sends more images\, agrees to sexual activity or meets another demand. \nIt can happen in lots of different ways. Sometimes it begins through dating apps\, social media\, messaging or online relationships. In other cases\, intimate material may be stolen\, obtained through deception or coercion\, recorded without consent\, or even fabricated. \nAs more of our relationships and social lives take place online\, understanding these risks matters. But conversations about online safety can also leave disabled people out\, focus too heavily on vulnerability\, or treat avoiding sex and relationships as the solution. \nThis discussion will look at sextortion through a wider lens: how disabled people navigate relationships online\, what accessible sex and relationships education can do to support people\, why recognising coercion is not always straightforward\, and what happens when someone tries to ask for help. \nThe conversation will also explore consent in online spaces: what consent means when sharing intimate images or information\, how coercion can undermine it\, and why accessible education about digital boundaries and sexual autonomy matters. \nWho is this event for?\nThis event is open to adults aged 18+. Disabled and neurodivergent people are particularly welcome as well as their carers and loved ones. \nPlease be aware that the discussion will include references to sexual coercion\, intimate-image abuse\, blackmail\, exploitation and online abuse. You are welcome to step out at any point if you need to. \nAccessibility\nProject Ability is an accessible venue\, and we want the event to be as welcoming and accessible as possible. \nIf there is anything we can do to support you to attend or take part\, please let us know when booking. If you need a BSL interpreter for this session\, please do send us an email to contact@pillowtalk.scot. \nThe event will also be livestreamed on YouTube. The link to access the event will be emailed on the day.

Together\, we’ll explore themes ranging from Education\, Planning\, Heritage\, Infrastructure\, Transport and Housing. We’ll ask if Scottish architecture can lead the way or whether we risk falling behind. The next 15 years will be the biggest period of change and we either shape it or be shaped by it. \nRIAS Live is our one-day conference\, bringing together architects and industry professionals from across Scotland and beyond for a dynamic programme of discussion\, networking\, and learning. The event offers the opportunity to explore current challenges and innovations in architecture\, and connect with peers from across the profession. \nFollowing our 2025 event at Dynamic Earth\, which sold out in advance\, demand for tickets is expected to be high. To avoid disappointment\, we strongly encourage early booking to secure your place.

SUMMARY:Samhain Masquerade Ball
DESCRIPTION:Féilire and Wyrd Collective are delighted to collaborate for a special Samhain celebration on the 30th of October at Sharkeys Bar.                             \nJoin us at Sharkeys Bar for Samhain traditions\, games\, art installations\, spoken word\, live music and DJ’s.        \nSamhain traditionally marks the Celtic New Year and the end of the harvest. One of the year’s most liminal times\, when the veil between the worlds is at its thinnest. A time to reflect on the last year\, set intentions\, and reflect on the light we will carry into the darkest half of the year. \nWe are throwing a Masquerade Ball to bring people together and also mark a year of collaborations between Féilire and Wyrd Collective. We have celebrated a full Celtic calendar\, starting with our Samhain event in Adrian’s last year\, Imbolc 31st of January at the Flying Duck\, Bealtaine in collaboration with Agnew Lane\, and an art installation and story walk for Lughnasagh. \nOn the night\, we are excited to be joined by three incredible live acts: Cashlin Mackenzie\, Medb\, and Culchie Goth which will make a very special night. \nWyrd Collective will be opening the evening with story telling. There will be art installations\, traditional Samhain games\, and a Féilire x Wyrd Dj set to close out the evening. \nFéilire is a collaboration between Lou Rowland and Zoe Sheehy\, and was born from overlaps in their practices and a desire to celebrate the four Celtic festivals. Féilire\, meaning calendar in Gaeilge (Irish)\, brings people together to mark Samhain\, Imbolc\, Bealtaine\, and Lughnasagh through  gatherings with storytelling\, music\, art installations\, and rituals. Féilire explores how these  practices can grow and evolve\, creating accessible and welcoming spaces for people to come  together and share collective experiences and community.   \nWyrd Collective is a collaborative storytelling collective based in Glasgow. Founded in early 2025  by multidisciplinary artist and facilitator\, Iona Taylor\, the group has grown through communal  practice to gather\, write and share tales. Their debut at Mesh\, and our collaborations have used storytelling to build community\, collectively reflect on the passing of time and mark the rhythms of the calendar.   \n  \nEvent details:   \nSharkeys Bar\, 51 Old Rutherglen Rd\,   \n30th October –  7pm – Midnight \nTickets – £10 – No one turned away for lack of funds.

SUMMARY:Samhain Celebration
DESCRIPTION:Samhain is the most sacred night in the witch’s calendar. As the veil between worlds grows thin\, we gather to honour our ancestors\, give thanks for the harvest\, and welcome the dark half of the year with open hearts and willing spirits. \nThis is a time of endings and beginnings\, a moment to release what no longer serves us\, to remember those who came before\, and to set powerful intentions for the cycle ahead. There is something truly magical about marking this threshold together in community\, and this year we’re celebrating on the most sacred date of all\, Halloween itself. \nJoin me at The Loft in Cambuslang for an intimate Samhain gathering where we’ll work with ancestor magick\, craft a door guardian spell to protect your home\, and come together around the Samhain fire for meditation\, reflection\, and feasting. \nThese gatherings are warm\, welcoming\, and open to everyone. Whether you’re a seasoned practitioner or completely new to witchcraft\, you belong in this circle. Bring your unique magick and come exactly as you are. \nThe ritual includes: \n\nAncestor spell and gratitude working\nA hand-crafted spell for you to take home\nGroup meditation and reflection\nIntention setting for the new cycle\nCoffee\, tea\, and homemade Samhain treats provided\n\nWhen: Saturday\, October 31st\, 2:00-4:00 pm \nWhere: The Loft\, 154a Main Street\, Cambuslang\, Glasgow G72 7EL \nI hope you can join us.
