Glasgow author Debbie Lucas is celebrating the publication of her first book, The Joy Frequency, by leaving seven signed copies in independent businesses across the city for strangers to discover.
Starting Friday 23 October, one book will be left each day at a different location as part of The Joy Ripple, a seven-day initiative designed to show how a small act of kindness can have an impact far beyond the person who starts it.
The seven Glasgow venues taking part are Main Character Energy,Forever Love & Light, Sunshine No.1, Harper Healing & Wellbeing, Maia Gifts, Daydreams Bookshop and Reiki Love Club. There are no competitions, conditions or formal tracking. Whoever finds a book is welcome to keep it, enjoy it or pass it on to someone who might need a little joy in their life.
Each participating business has been chosen for its connection to the book’s themes of creativity, new beginnings, authenticity and human connection.
Debbie said: “We often think joy comes from big events or milestones, but sometimes it’s a conversation, a cup of tea or a moment of connection. I’m so grateful to the seven independent businesses who have helped me make this happen. I’ll know where each book starts its journey, but I may never know where it ends up, and that’s part of the magic. I hope someone finds a copy on exactly the day they need it.”
One of the participating businesses, Glasgow’s Forever Love & Light, has also expressed interest in introducing The Joy Frequency to its Read, Thrive, Repeat book club.
Leigh Raw, Founder of Forever Love & Light, commented: “When I discovered Debbie’s story and how she has drawn on her own experiences and challenges to inspire others, I knew the book belonged in Forever Love & Light. Our shop was created around the belief that even the smallest connection or kind word can make a difference. Debbie’s message that joy can exist even through life’s difficult moments reflects everything we believe in.”
The campaign also reflects Debbie’s own journey. After more than 20 years working in social work and public protection, supporting children and families through trauma and crisis, she left her established career to become a coach, speaker and now author.
“For years, I did what so many women do. I looked after everyone else and thought joy was something I’d get to later,” Debbie explained. “What I’ve learned is that joy isn’t a reward for getting everything right, sometimes it starts with something incredibly small.”
She added: “Glasgow is my home, so sharing these books across the city feels special. I hope people enjoy finding them and, if they want to, share their discoveries using #TheJoyRippleGlasgow. It would be lovely to see where the ripple goes.”
