Superposition

20 October @ 9:00 am - 29 October @ 4:00 pm
Free

Marking the centenary of the Schrödinger equation; a world-first art show exploring the ideas behind quantum physics.

Sixteen artworks spin at 400 revolutions per minute. Thousands of holes cut through sheets of aluminium appear to tunnel through space, transforming flat surfaces into shifting, three-dimensional forms.

For a moment, the artworks seem to become something that shouldn’t exist. Then they stop spinning and the 3D forms collapse back into 2D patterns and the illusion disappears.

One mystery remains. Each artwork has an identical twin. When they stop spinning, most of the twins behave exactly as chance would predict: they show the same sides half the time and opposite sides half the time. But one pair doesn’t. They show the same sides three quarters of the time. How does this pair know what their twin is doing?

Created by artist Gregor Harvie in collaboration with physicist Neel Mackinnon and the Quantum Theory Group at the University of Glasgow, Superposition is funded by the Quantum Technologies Alliance for Research Challenges (Quantum ARC) supported by the Scottish Funding Council, with additional funding from the Institute of Physics and the EPSRC Centre of Doctoral Training (CDT) in Applied Quantum Technologies at the University of Strathclyde.

Superposition will be presented in the entrance foyer of the Technology and Innovation Centre at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow on weekdays from 20 to 29 October, 9am to 4pm.
