The couple that tricks together, sticks together! Husband-and-wife magicians Alan and Kat Hudson are bringing their hilarious comedy magic show, Married at First Sleight, to Eastwood Park Theatre in Giffnock.
Alan and Kat both appeared separately on Britain’s Got Talent before joining forces as Hudson and Hudson. Alan went on to fool legendary Las Vegas magicians Penn and Teller on their television show Fool Us and appeared on ITV’s The Next Great Magician. Kat has also appeared on Fool Us and performed in the West End magic production Wonderville.
When Alan and Kat first appeared on Britain’s Got Talent, they had no intention of becoming a double act. Ant and Dec asked whether they might perform together, but they both said no. Dec suggested that was probably sensible, warning them that in a double act, “one of you always ends up doing a lot of the heavy lifting”.
Alan later decided that combining their talents could help them create something audiences hadn’t seen before and make their magic even more amazing. Kat remembers the conversation differently: according to her, Alan said they could charge more if she joined the act.
That difference of opinion gives audiences a taste of Married at First Sleight. The show mixes jaw-dropping magic, mind-reading and audience participation with stand-up, sketches and the couple’s contrasting accounts of married life.
Some of their onstage banter is written, but they frequently go off script. Alan says Kat can’t resist introducing details from their personal lives because she knows she’ll have his full attention if she mentions them in front of an audience.
The show features their most ambitious and entertaining material, including a spectacular version of the famous bullet catch, a mind-reading experiment involving a dictionary and a finale designed to take the audience completely by surprise. Audience members may be invited to take part, but Kat promises that anyone chosen will have a wonderful time.
The couple have performed around the world and previously appeared at the Edinburgh Fringe. Both have particularly happy memories of performing in Scotland.
Alan says he loves the honesty of Scottish audiences: “When Scottish audiences laugh and applaud, you know it’s 100% genuine.”
Kat added: “Scottish audiences are the best we’ve ever performed for. The warmth you instantly feel when you get onstage is something you never forget. We can’t wait to come to Glasgow!”
Married at First Sleight is a feel-good night of marriage, magic and mind-reading for date nights, mate nights and anyone who has ever argued over the remote. Even people who don’t normally choose magic shows can expect an evening filled with comedy, surprises and impossible moments.
The performance takes place at Eastwood Park Theatre, Rouken Glen Road, Giffnock, on Friday 4 September at 7.30pm. It runs for approximately one hour and 15 minutes and is suitable for ages 12 and over.
Tickets cost £20, with no booking or transaction fee. The theatre has free parking, a café and bar.
