Glasgow Free Bookshop has Officially been open for 6 months

It has officially been 6 months since Get Free Books Glasgow arrived in Buchanan Galleries.

The unique book shop allows customers to take up to 3 books per person, per visit at zero cost and operates entirely on community donations, with a variety of books of all genres, mediums and ages groups. There is something for everyone with new stock daily.

Get Free Books Glasgow opened its doors to the public on Sunday 8th June, on the first floor of the Buchanan Galleries Shopping Centre, with the goal of making books and reading free and accessible to all. It is first to open in Scotland, joining the ranks of the over 20 shops across the UK.

The concept of free books continues to pleasantly surprise both newcomers and regulars alike.

One first-time customer commented “It’s a shock when you hear something is free, you almost don’t trust it, it feels so good to be true”

But true it is. On average, the Get Free Book shop gives out hundreds of free books every week; a number they hope will continue to rise.

Lead volunteer Rebecca has high hopes for the future of the shop “We here at GET Free books are working hard to make books accessible to the community, and to prevent books from going to the landfill. Currently we are still building our volunteer base and are looking to be open more consistently in the new year! So far, the response to our shop has been overwhelmingly positive; our customers are incredibly generous and supportive of our shop! It’s been a great six months for us”.

The shop is a booklovers dream. With shelves overflowing with books, a wall full of recommendations from fellow bibliophiles. Bookish Christmas decorations all carefully made by hand fitting the festive season.

As well as a display of items left behind in donated books; a memento to past readers; forgotten bookmarks, photos, letters and more.

To suit the Christmas period, the bookshop also took part in the popular trend of a Blind Date with a Book. In which books are wrapped like presents and when unveiled reveal a lovely surprise for the lucky customer.

‘It’s an absolutely brilliant opportunity; the volunteers are so helpful. The fact that the books are free is amazing for people who don’t have access or who love literature just like myself’ commented Kelly, from Glenrothes.

In only 6 months, Get Free Books Glasgow has become a must visit spot for anyone who loves and appreciates a good read, and they hope to continue serving Glasgow’s readers for many years to come.
